appman

Version 0.1.1

appman is a command-line toolkit for the terminal. One static binary serves a folder over HTTP on your own machine, and views text, directories, pictures, and video.

Download

Pick the file that matches your system. Each file is a single executable. Nothing else has to be installed for serv, text, directories, or pictures.

The same digests are in SHA256SUMS.

Check the hash

In the directory that contains the binary and SHA256SUMS:

sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS

On macOS:

shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS

Each line should end with OK. To check one file by hand, compare the printed digest with the table above:

sha256sum appman-linux-amd64
shasum -a 256 appman-darwin-arm64

Installation

macOS

Apple silicon:

chmod +x appman-darwin-arm64
sudo mv appman-darwin-arm64 /usr/local/bin/appman
appman -v

Intel:

chmod +x appman-darwin-amd64
sudo mv appman-darwin-amd64 /usr/local/bin/appman
appman -v

Linux

64-bit Intel or AMD:

chmod +x appman-linux-amd64
sudo mv appman-linux-amd64 /usr/local/bin/appman
appman -v

64-bit ARM:

chmod +x appman-linux-arm64
sudo mv appman-linux-arm64 /usr/local/bin/appman
appman -v

appman -v prints appman v0.1.1. If you cannot write to /usr/local/bin, put the file in a directory that is already on your PATH, such as $HOME/bin.

Usage

appman -h, --help Show this help message
appman -v, --version Show version information
appman about Show appman information

appman serv [path] Start a static file server in the specified path (default: current directory)
appman serv . Start server in current directory
appman serv /path/to/dir Start server in specified directory

appman view <path> View a picture, a text file or list the folder
appman view photo.png Render the picture
appman view notes.txt Print the text
appman view ./somedir List the directory

Running appman with no arguments, or appman about, prints:

appman: try 'appman --help' for more information, developed by Bin Hua <[email protected]>

serv

appman serv serves a directory on 127.0.0.1 only. The first port it tries is 32459. If that port is taken, it tries the next one. With no path, it serves the current directory. Leave it running and open the printed URL in a browser. Stop it with Ctrl+C.

view

A text file is printed to the terminal. A directory is listed, with directories first. A picture is sent to the terminal as the original file, not a shrunk copy. iTerm, WezTerm, and Warp use the iTerm inline-image protocol. Ghostty, kitty, and other terminals use the kitty graphics protocol. A video is played silently at about 10 frames per second and needs ffmpeg and ffprobe on your PATH. Ctrl+C stops playback.
